IAEA General Conference: Iraq Strengthens International Nuclear Cooperation
At the 68th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, Austria, Dr. Naeem Al-Aboudi, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and Chairman of the Iraqi Atomic Energy Commission, reaffirmed Iraq’s commitment to international cooperation in advancing its peaceful nuclear applications.

In his address, Dr. Al-Aboudi emphasized the legitimate right of nations to pursue safe and peaceful nuclear technology, supporting economic, developmental, and healthcare initiatives while diversifying energy sources. He highlighted Iraq’s active efforts toward sustainable development goals, including its accession to key international agreements such as the Convention on Nuclear Safety and the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and Radioactive Waste Management.

Additionally, Iraq has enacted and implemented nuclear-related legislation, including the Iraqi Atomic Energy Commission Law and the National Authority for Nuclear, Radiological, Chemical, and Biological Control Law in 2024.

Dr. Al-Aboudi further emphasized Iraq’s ongoing collaboration with the IAEA in capacity building for peaceful nuclear applications through technical cooperation programs, training, and development opportunities. These initiatives are pivotal in ensuring the safe and effective use of nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
